Barbara Boyce

Councillor - Heworth

I was born in York and attended Haxby Road Primary School and Mill Mount Grammar School. My father was a local bricklayer and we lived near Rowntree’s factory. I started work at the age of 16 and later went to university as a mature student.

I spent much of my career teaching in further education helping people like myself who needed a second chance at education. Before returning to York and being elected to the Council I had experience of contesting and winning elections and have been a Labour parliamentary candidate. I joined the Labour party in the 1970s as I had a growing commitment to fairness and opportunity for all, and have remained an active member ever since.

My political interests are community safety, housing, environmental protection and the local economy. I am also active in the Planning and Licensing work of the Council. I am a member of the board of York Theatre Royal and also support various local residents’ associations. I think it is vital that we make sure York is a place with a prosperous future for its inhabitants as well as conserving the best of its history.

In the little spare time that I have I volunteer for the local RSPCA and also help teach computer skills to older people. My colleagues Tina Funnell, Daf Williams and myself are very privileged to represent the people of Heworth ward and we hope to remain the human face of local government for the people in our area.
