Housing for local people in York Villages

We all know that there is a desperate shortage of all types of homes in York, particularly affordable family homes for local people. York has been required to set building targets for new houses by the Tory led government, in the form of a local plan.

Only Labour has approached this task in an honest way. While brown field sites are our favoured first option, the simple fact is that there are not enough of these sites to meet the housing targets for the next fifteen years. This means that - whoever wins the election in May - some green belt land will be built on.

In proposing the building of a new village - Winthorpe - Labour is ensuring that a minimum number of new houses need to be built in the established villages.

Both the local Conservative and LibDems have opposed the development of Winthorpe, whilst also refusing to say where they will build these thousands of new houses instead.
