Kallum Taylor, a 27-year-old Holgate resident who works for a local housing association has been chosen to be Labour's candidate at the Holgate by-election.
From 2012 to 2014, Kallum was the President of York University Students' Union (YUSU), standing up for staff and students on local and national issues and securing increased funding for campus services.
The by-election, caused by the retirement of former Labour Lord Mayor Sonja Crisp, will be held on Thursday 15 February.
Kallum was chosen as Labour's candidate from a shortlist of five. "Holgate has got some big challenges as has York. The York Central Development, which lies within the ward, has to provide solutions that are right for the city and not be just a chance for someone to make a quick buck.
"There’s so much going wrong in this country at the moment and so I feel it is necessary to try and do something for my community.
I’m going to be speaking with as many local people as possible about how we can improve our neighbourhood together. Please get in touch if you want to find out more, raise an issue, or get involved with the campaign."
