Labour Manifesto for York

York is a fantastic place to live. York Labour wants to make it even better; a more prosperous and vibrant city where prosperity is felt by all residents from our most vulnerable citizens to our most affluent.

Over the next four years, Labour will focus on four key priorities:

York's economy and the cost of living

  • Building the local economy to create better paid jobs for local people.

Labour will continue to invest in the city to attract better paid jobs and work to improve shopping parades in local communities.
  • Creating jobs and training opportunities for young people.

Labour will continue to promote training opportunities and apprenticeships for young people.
  • Increasing the Financial Assistance Scheme.

Labour will double the scheme to support the city's poorest.
  • Reducing bus fares for 16 to 18 year olds and support local bus services.

Labour will fund reduced bus fares for 16 to 18 year olds and continue to subsidise buses so all areas of the city have a bus service.
  • Continue to offer low cost energy switching schemes.

Labour will help to reduce energy bills for York residents

Homes

  • Continue to build more council homes.

Labour will build more council homes over the next 4 years.
  • Working with developers to build more affordable homes and community facilities.

Labour will ensure that developers play their part in the provision of low cost, energy efficient homes to buy. We will insist on contributions towards schools, roads and community space on major new developments.
  • Working with landlords to ensure private rented homes meet decent standards.

Labour will encourage landlords to sign up to the Landlord Regulation Scheme and take action when properties fail to meet acceptable standards.
  • Ensure there are homes for your children and grandchildren.

Labour will bring forward sites like York Central and British Sugar, as the first option for development. We will deliver a Local Plan that protects green belt land whilst securing more homes for York people to live in.

Street level services and our local environment

  • Keeping our streets clean and safe.

Labour will create a neighbourhood fund to ensure local priorities such as street cleaning, street lights, grass cutting, planting and litter picking are decided by you.
  • Extending the Harsh Winter fund.

Labour will ensure there is money for gritting when the weather is bad.
  • Increasing Street Enforcement.

Labour will tackle anti-social behaviour with extra Enforcement Officers. We will tackle street drinking, dog fouling, fly tipping, graffiti, licensing infringements and noise nuisance.
  • Tackling congestion.

Labour will use the cross-party Congestion Commission findings to make traffic move more easily around

Supporting our citizens young and old

  • Improving care for older people and those with dementia.

Labour will work with local health services to transform York's adult social care, we will support carers and help our elderly residents maintain independence in their own homes wherever possible.
  • Providing better support for adults and children with mental health needs.

Labour will help voluntary sector organisations to increase the support they provide for our communities.
  • Working with schools to ensure all our children attend a school that is Good or Outstanding.

York already has great schools; Labour will build on this to give the city's children the best start in life.
