Massive cuts to York council services revealed

Proposals for further savage cuts to council services were put before the Tory and Lib Dem executive last night.

Totalling over £10 million over the next two years, the sheer breadth and scale of these cuts is staggering.

Most of the cuts have been forced onto the council by central government’s ideological austerity policies, but not all. By choosing to raise council tax by less than neighbouring Tory councils the Tory/Lib Dem coalition in York is imposing additional cuts to services than it needed to make.

 Help needed

We need your help to identify exactly what these cuts will mean to the provision of services and how they will affect the lives of affect local people. There are 70 different cuts to investigate.

The language used in the cuts document is often evasive and non-specific, so it is often difficult to understand the real implications.

These are examples of the phrases used to describe different cuts:

  • ‘work with the community to pass over administration of the service’
  • ‘Promote alternatives to nursing care’
  • ‘Restructure the team to focus on statutory duties’
  • ‘Stop in-house provision and buy in as and when required’

Please take some time to read through the proposed cuts and if you have knowledge of the areas affected please tell us about it.
